key features of effective readers: (skills and knowledge)
Monitor their comprehension to make sure there are no gaps in their understanding (Konza, 2011). Good readers try to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and concepts in text, and they deal with inconsistencies or gaps as needed. (Duke & Pearson, 2002, p.206)
Good readers engage in a continuous process of asking and searching for answers to self-proposed questions (Singer, 1981, as cited in Scull, 2010, p. 88).
Are active readers and frequently make predictions about what to come.
Effective readers construct, revise and question the meanings as they read (Konza, 2011; Duke & Pearson, 2002)
Understand the purpose of their reading and purpose of the text and read different kinds of text differently e.g. the way they read a recipe or make sense is different to making sense of a narrative (Fish, 2014).
Can critically extract key information and interpret meaning on the basis of their prior knowledge.
Good readers adjust their reading strategies when required. They break words into syllables, use letter sounds with vocabulary knowledge to ascertain meaning of unfamiliar words (Konza, 2011)
Evaluate the quality of text and react to the text both intellectually and emotionally (Duke & Pearson, 2002) i.e. whether they like the book or text and why.
